Newborn Photography

newborn information

The first few days of a baby's life are incredible. Newborns stay ‘new' for such a short time and I love to capture all of the special details of your fresh little one before they change.  I have put together some frequently asked questions to help you plan your photo shoot.  If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

When should I call to schedule my newborn session?

If possible, before your baby is born. My schedule fills up quickly, so please call to schedule you newborn appointment before your baby is born. If your little one has already arrived, please contact me as soon as possible so I can try book your session before your baby is two weeks old.

Is one week to early for photos?

Definitely not! Newborn babies photograph best between 5-8 days old. At this point they still sleep a lot and are the most receptive to positioning. I can spend up to two hours on a newborn session and always allow plenty of time for feedings, nappy changes and breaks for both mother and baby.

What should I dress my baby in?

Newborns photograph best without any clothes at all! I also love to photograph newborns swaddled in blankets, with lots of texture. If you have a special blanket or two, keep them on hand for various photographs. I also recommend that you have plenty of wipes as well.

What should I organize for my Newborn session?

I recommend that your baby is well rested and plan to feed baby as soon as I arrive. Sleepy babies photograph perfectly, so I will ask you to undress and swaddle baby before the feeding takes place. This is so your baby does not become disturbed whilst undressing them after feeding. The session may have multiple breaks for feeding your baby, to ensure that your little one is happy and has a full tummy. Being a mother myself, I understand the importance of feeding schedules, however I may ask you to break the rules on the day and not be too concerned with feed times and that you may need to feed your baby on demand or when they get a bit fussy to ensure their comfortable during the session.

Can myself and my family be photographed with my baby?

Yes, of course! I encourage it. I love to capture the emotion of those special first days with your new little one and believe there is no greater image than a new mum or dad cuddling and admiring their newborn. Skin on skin images are a unique way to capture the purity of these relationships, however it is advisable that parents bring a long sleeved black shirt so that they may serve as a backdrop for baby in some of the images.
